Various unknown men attempted to take the life of Globo TV journalist Fidelina Sandoval near the television station in the Honduran capital on Monday.
It was reported that the journalist was going into the station facilities when the individuals began to follow her with the intention of killing her. According to the testimony of Sandoval she was headed towards the television station where she works when she realized that a grey pick-up truck was approaching her and that the individual in the front passenger seat carried something that caught her attention without being able to describe if he had a firearm. She explains that she just remembers next there was the sound of an explosive in the face of which she instinctively protected herself. Fortunately she was uninjured in the attack.
Sandoval was taken, accompanied by some of her work colleagues, to a human rights organization to make a formal complaint. As of this time, the authorities have not been present at the scene and the National Commissioner for Human Rights Ramón Custodio has not made a statement about the event.
To date, more than 30 journalists have been killed in circumstances that have not been clarified; the majority of them were eliminated for reasons related to articles published by the deceased about police and military repression and complaints about corruption. In addition there is a long list of complaints of attempted violence and violations of freedom of expression and the freedom of the press.
For Sandoval who covers political and judicial topics, some of the exposures and interviews that she has done as part of the news broadcasts have bothered the involved parties and caused the attack against her.
